Abstract:
In January 2024, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration released a new image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy M87. The 230 GHz observations conducted in 2018 show an asymmetric ring-like structure and a ring diameter consistent with the results from the 2017 image. In this talk I will present a summary of previous EHT results and the relevance of the new image towards M87*, with a special emphasis on the new capabilities that were available in 2018, in particular, the participation of the Greenland Telescope, which is a project led in part by ASIAA. I will also give you an insight into how the EHT (a collaboration of more than 300 members) works, and a peek into future prospects.
