The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) collaboration have made their first 2 million observations of stars and galaxies freely available for every astronomer in the world to explore. Led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) and funded by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Science, DESI is the most ambitious project yet undertaken to measure the scale of the universe.
In the DESI project, IoA Assistant Professor Andrew Cooper was one of the two leaders of the “DESI Milky Way Survey”. This team is analyzing DESI’s spectra of stars in the Milky Way galaxy to study galaxy evolution and the nature of dark matter. The first release of the DESI data includes approximately 500,000 stars, and the research findings of the Milky Way team have been published in the Astrophysical Journal.
The NTHU “Galactic Archaeology Team” led by Dr. Cooper has been involved in the DESI project for four years. The team working on DESI includes two doctoral students from the Institute of Astronomy, Namitha Kizhuprakkat from India and Li-wen Liao (廖俐雯), as well as Sy-yun Pu (蒲思云), an undergraduate in the Department of Physics.
Another research group in Taiwan led by Assistant Professor Ting-Wen Lan at NTU is also part of the DESI collaboration. More about Dr. Lan’s work on DESI can be found here: https://www.tingwenlan.com/news/desi-2023-edr-news

暗能量光譜儀計畫DESI(Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument),14日與國際同步公布自2021年觀測至今的第一批共200萬筆天體光譜,免費提供全球天文學家使用與探索。
