I will introduce the University of Edinburgh's Wide Field Astronomy Unit, which designs software to process large astronomical surveys and in particular the work done with respect to the VISTA Data Flow System (VDFS) that archives image and catalogue data for UKIRT-WFCAM, VISTA and VST-OMEGACAM. The WFCAM and VISTA Science Archives host the largest near-infrared surveys that cover a wide range of scientific studies from studies of brown-dwarfs to the highest redshift QSOs. In particular, I will highlight some projects that I have been particularly involved with including the VISTA  Variables in Via Lactea (VVV), which has taken 100 billion measurements and views through much of the Galactic dust to see stellar populations and variable stars in the Galactic bulge and far-side of the disk.
