Abstract:
Using a statistical approach, we employed recent observations of tens of thousands of intermediate-old stars with the APOGEE, GAIA, and RAVE large-scale spectroscopic surveys to detect the spiral arm segments in our Milky Way Galaxy. The distances of the centers (the densest parts), pitch angles of the previously known 3 kpc, Norma, Scutum, Sagittarius, Orion, Perseus, and Outer logarithmic spiral arms and their widths are estimated. For the first time, two new Outer+1 and Outer+2 spiral arm segments in the outer Galaxy were found. Thus, the spiral structure extends well outside the Outer arm at least up to the Galactocentric radius of about 16 kpc.
